About

Gealdýr is the musical project of Dutch singer-songwriter Jonathan Barendsma. Since its inception in 2019, Gealdýr has become a recognized name within the Nordic folk music scene, known for powerful releases such as Ymir (in collaboration with Danheim), Sól, and Sær.

As the project evolved, Gealdýr expanded its focus to explore a wider range of historical and mythical influences. The music now interweaves the rich tapestries of Nordic, Celtic, and early medieval folklore, alongside themes drawn from ancient legends and stories. While the foundation remains deeply rooted in Norse mythology, the project also draws inspiration from other cultural myths and elements of fantasy, creating a unique blend of ambient dark folk.

Barendsma’s compositions feature lyrics in Old Norse, Old English, and other ancient languages, capturing the essence of historical eras and the mythical stories they tell. The name Gealdýr itself reflects this blending of cultures, combining the Gaelic word “geal” (white) and the Old Norse word “dýr” (deer), symbolizing the ethereal and ancient qualities that define the project’s sound.

Through Gealdýr, Barendsma continues to explore the cyclical nature of life, the mysteries of the past, and the healing power of music. His work resonates with those who seek to connect with the ancient world and its stories, offering a musical journey through the mists of time.
