Album cover for Gealdýr's album 'Sól'

Sól

Released on August 9, 2019, Sól is Gealdýr’s first album. It tells about the creation of this world, the end of it and the rebirth. The ongoing cycle of life. Nowadays most people think that life is very linear, but when we look into Norse mythology we can find that even after Ragnarök (The fate of the Gods) life will continue. The old sun will die and a new one will be born. The old Gods die and after that the world is ready for a new cycle to start.

Lyrics

Ginnungagap

Ár var alda þar er Ýmir bygði
Vara sandr né sær né svalar unnir
Jörð fannsk æva né upphiminn
Gap var ginnunga, en gras hvergi

Sól varp sunnan, sinni mána
Hendi inni hœgri um himinjódyr
Sól þat ne vissi hvar hon sali átti
Máni þat ne vissi hvat hann megins átti
Stjörnur þat ne vissu hvar þær staði áttu

Of old was the age, when Ymir lived
Sea nor cool waves, nor sand there were
Earth had not been, nor heaven above
But a yawning gap, and grass nowhere

The sun, the sister of the moon, from the south
Her right hand cast over heaven’s rim
No knowledge she had where her home should be
The moon knew not what might was his
The stars knew not where their stations were

Myrkvidr

Meyjar flugu sunnan,
Myrkviðr í gögnum,
Alvitr unga, örlög drýgja;

En einn Völundr sat í Ulfdölum,
Svá beið hann sinnar ljóssar kvánar

2x
Myrkviðr

Ríða Myrkvið yfir,
Meyjar flugu sunnan,
Alvitr unga, örlög drýgja

En einn Völundr sat í Ulfdölum,
Svá beið hann sinnar ljóssar kvánar

2x
Myrkviðr

Maids from the south,
Through Myrkwood flew,
Fair and young, their fate to follow

But Völundr alone stayed in Ulfdölum,
So he waited for his shining wife

2x
Myrkwood

Through Myrkwood ride,
Maids from the south,
Fair and young, their fate to follow

But Völundr alone stayed in Ulfdölum,
So he waited for his shining wife

2x
Myrkwood

Baldr

Ek sá Baldri, blóðgum tívur
Óðins barni, örlög folgin
Stóð of vaxinn völlum hæri
Mjór ok mjök fagr mistilteinn
Fagr mistilteinn

Blóðgum tívur, blóðgum tívur
örlög folgin, örlög folgin

I saw Baldr, the bleeding god
The son of Odinn, his destiny set
Famous and fair, in the lofty fields
Full grown in strength, the mistletoe stood
The mistletoe stood

The bleeding god, the bleeding god
His destiny set, his destiny set

Valkyrjur

Sá hon Valkyrjur vítt of komnar
Görvar at ríða til goðþjóðar
Skuld helt skildi en Skögul önnur
Gunnr, Hildr, Göndul ok Geirskögul
Nú eru talðar nönnur Herjans
Görvar at ríða grund Valkyrjur

Sá hon vítt ok of vítt of veröld hverja

On all sides I saw Valkyries assemble
Ready to ride to the ranks of the gods
Skuld bore the shield and Skogul rode next
Gunnr, Hildr, Gondul and Geirskogul
For they are named Herjan’s maidens
Valkyries ready to ride over the earth

Sól

Eina dóttur

berr alfröðull

áðr hana fenrir fari

sú skal ríða

þá er regin deyja

móður brautir, mær

Sól ek sá,

svá þótti mér,

sem ek sæja göfgan guð;

henni ek laut

hinzta sinni

aldaheimi í.

Sól

A daughter

is birthed by Álfröðull (the Sun goddess)

after she is swallowed by the wolf Fenrir

She (the New Sun) shall ride

as the gods are dying

on the old paths of her mother.

The sun I saw, and it seemed to me

as if I saw a glorious god:

I bowed before her,

for the last time,

in the world of men.
